All season tires are the standard tires that come on new cars. They are ideal for general use, but as you probably know, they don't perform as well when there is snow or ice on the road.

Additionally, when the temperature gets cold, the rubber gets more brittle and doesn't grip as well. That is where winter tires come in. They are specially designed to stand up to the cold better, and they also have treads that are constructed to ensure that they wick off wet snow and slush and bite deep into the surface. Those special tweaks make them much more effective in the winter, but they also reduce how long you can lose them. So when the weather starts to improve, go back to the all season tires and use those.
